Seus fósseis foram encontrados em 1953 próximo à cidade de Presidente Prudente, no estado de São Paulo, por um morador local. Na época, passava por ali o paleontólogo gaúcho Llewellyn Ivor Price (1905-1980), um dos pioneiros nessa área de pesquisa no Brasil. Avisado do achado, ele coletou grande parte do material e levou-o ao Museu de Ciências da Terra, no Rio de Janeiro. Mas a identificação do dinossauro só veio a público em 2016, quando os pesquisadores afirmaram se tratar de uma espécie ainda desconhecida da ciência.
