What Is the Lunar New Year?
The Lunar New Year is a time of renewal and new beginnings. In many cultures, especially China, it is known as the Spring Festival. It's a time to gather family, honor ancestors and wish good luck for the year ahead. Each year is associated with one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac, which influence the characteristics and events of the year. Celebrated in various parts of the world, Lunar New Year usually triggers the largest annual migration of people on the planet. And although it is known by some in the West as Chinese New Year, it is not just celebrated in China. The Lunar New Year falls this year on February 10, 2024, beginning the Year of the Dragon – in Chinese astrology. Traditionally, it's a time of family gatherings, lots of food and some very loud celebrations.
